We are seeking a Research Specialist II, for the growing new laboratory of Prof. Greg Newby in the Department of Genetic Medicine, which is focused on the development and application of cutting-edge genome editing tools to mammalian cell and mouse models of genetic disease. The Research Specialist II will be responsible for optimizing and conducting molecular biology, cell culture, and mouse model experiments. Prior experience in genome editing methods is not required and training will be provided on the job. However, the applicant should be experienced in molecular biology and genetics research and work well with collaborations and teams. The applicant should be comfortable with identifying, developing, and optimizing molecular biology assays and working in mouse and cell culture BSL2+ facilities.

Scientific Responsibilities (85%)
Experimental Responsibilities.
Performs and optimizes sophisticated laboratory methods associated with genetics and molecular biology such as: mammalian iPS cell culture, isolation of DNA and RNA, digital or quantitative real-time PCR, DNA electrophoresis, DNA cloning, next-generation sequencing, and viral vector production and delivery.
Independently performs and optimizes various higher-level assays, including Chip-qPCR and library preparation for RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and whole genome sequencing.
Maintains mouse colonies; genotyping/weighing of mice.
Mouse treatment with nanoparticle / viral vectors.
Dissection of mice for anatomical, histological, and nucleotide sequencing studies.
General
Uses scientific knowledge and lab experience to make judgments and decisions that may alter research objectives.
Makes scientific contribution to protocol development, efficiency, and productivity.
Collaboratively and independently develops new techniques.
Applies published research methods to current experimental work by investigating published protocols and discussing them with PI.
Administrative Responsibilities (15%)
Records research activities so that they can be clearly reproduced and interpreted by other laboratory members.
Process analyzed data into figures for scientific publications and presentations.
Communicates with collaborators to plan experiments and discuss results.
Contributes to writing peer-reviewed manuscripts and grant proposals.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience with molecular biology (including advanced) techniques, cell culture, and mouse work (as above).
Must have a working knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines achieved through undergraduate studies and laboratory experience: biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, microbiology and/or genetics.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to work in BSL2+ cell culture and mouse facilities.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field
Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula
