The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is currently seeking a Research Specialist to work on neuromuscular research projects funded by NIH. This position will work in a bench science laboratory, handle a large number of animals, conduct animal surgeries, and other basic scientific works, such as western blotting, PCR, and histological work. The positon will collaborate with other JHUSOM faculty/labs in the Department of Medicine / Division of Geriatrics where appropriate.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Operate as an integrated member of both the clinical and basic research teams.
Use scientific procedures and techniques to conduct the laboratory research studies. This includes, but is not limited to managing the logistics of laboratory sample procurement, processing, storage, analysis and tracking both across the university and with outside collaborators.
Use scientific methods, procedures and techniques to conduct the laboratory measures for clinical studies.
Maintain a mouse colony that is used as a model for human aging, and complete experiments including, but not limited to genotyping, physical testing,and tissue collection using established methods.
Follow established procedures and protocols using specific techniques to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments, such as: basic tissue culture, cell separation methods, electrophoretic separations, assays, basic molecular biology, and other specialized histology and biological techniques.
Identify both technical and experimental issues that require special attention using a basic understanding of theory behind experiments to complete assigned projects.
Investigate, develop, and perform research methods to achieves specific aim of assigned projects.
Exercise professional and scientific judgment and assume responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results, which requires regular and continuous decision making having an impact on the success of multiple projects.
Prepare reports and exchange routine information in an appropriate manner upon request and at weekly laboratory meetings using good oral and written communication skills.
Utilize software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.
Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
