We are seeking a Communications Specialist who will find, report, and write content and edit a newsletter in accordance with a department editorial schedule set by WSE marketing and communications, and will work with the admissions office and academic program coordinators to develop communications for prospective students. The Communications Specialist is expected to stay current with technology and media trends and suggest new related activities to the institute/departments.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Promotional Material Preparation
Assists in writing, editing, and placing promotional materials for print, broadcast, and digital media, including feature stories, columns, and pitches/ideas for stories and news releases, in coordination with WSE Communications staff.
Assists on various newsletters; including developing story ideas, editing, and working with WSE Communications staff. Selects artwork, graphics, pictures, and illustrations to best highlight department research and student work.
Ensures all new faculty, staff, and researchers have branded materials for lectures, presentations, correspondence, etc.
Website Management/Social Media
Assesses, reviews, and posts all materials for news and publications on the related websites Researches and assesses the efficacy of web-based activities Posts strategic news and information on all appropriate social media sites and platforms.

Digital Marketing/Digital Communications
Maintains working knowledge of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), digital marketing, and website design.
Works with central Marcom to develop and execute a comprehensive strategy to improve DMSE ranking in search engine results; meets marketing, recruitment, and communications goals of expanding reach, audiences, and increasing awareness.
Develops database for SEO keyword research and updates to keep DMSE/MCP websites at top of search results.
Maintains email lists and databases of students, alumni, faculty, and related professionals.
Maintains shared information and calendar information on the department's shared drives/Outlook calendars, OneDrive, and Google Drive to organize and store DMSE MarComm resources and materials for faculty, staff, and student workers.
Analyze and optimize SEO, web traffic and social stats and engagement.
Consults with faculty and mentor student communications reps for lab websites about WordPress how-To's, provides regular maintenance and updates, and follows best practices for website layout, content, and WSE and University Branding Guidelines.
Digital Material Preparation
Prepares postings of digital promotional materials (photos, stories, videos, etc.) Assists in the coordination of photography and video needs.
Events
Develops marketing materials (brochures, signage, promotional merchandise) for conferences, special events, and lecture series for department/center/institute as well as for school-wide efforts and recruiting events. Coordinates and executes all logistics for special events in accordance with WSE event guidelines.
Miscellaneous
Helps execute media and/or marketing campaigns in line with WSE marketing and communications office. The Communications Specialist should ensure all communications projects and marketing efforts comply with the University Branding Guidelines and JHU Use of Name Guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in related field.
Two years related experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Three or more years related experience in science journalism and digital communications preferred.
