The Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions is a groundbreaking initiative in the field of public health advocacy and science. The Center combines the expertise of highly respected gun violence researchers with the skills of deeply experienced gun violence prevention advocates. We use a public health approach to conduct rigorous scientific research to identify a range of innovative solutions to gun violence. Because gun violence disproportionately impacts communities of color, we ground our work in equity and seek insights from those most impacted on appropriate solutions. Using the best available science, our Center works towards expanding evidence-based advocacy and policy-making efforts. This combination of expertise creates a unique opportunity to turn public health research into action that reduces deaths and injuries from gun violence.
The Center is seeking a State Affairs Manager to work directly with the Director of Policy and Programming and policy and programming team to help craft and execute state-level policy work for a variety of states. Additionally, the Advocacy Manager will manage engagement with state policymakers and national and state advocacy collaborators. The Advocacy Manager will coordinate with legal staff and research faculty for bill drafting and educational materials. This position reports to the Director of Policy and Programming.
This is a full-time, hybrid post (2 days a week) in either Washington, DC or Baltimore, MD.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Manage and execute state legislative policy strategy for priority partner states.
Lead and coordinate weekly internal Center advocacy call.
Engage with policymakers on priority policy issues to provide public health resources, translation materials, and other technical assistance.
Tracking and monitoring priority bills during legislative sessions.
Draft, coordinate, and provide testimony on priority legislation in priority states.
Manage and coordinate with expert faculty for policy engagement and hearings.
Manage partnerships with state gun violence prevention (GVP) organizations to provide policy expertise and technical support.
Perform other duties as required.
Maintain subject matter knowledge of gun violence prevention policies and laws.
Coordinate with Communications and research translation team on policy campaigns, including drafting opinion pieces, press statements, and other outreach materials.
Collaborate with DEIP team to conduct IDARE reviews and checks of state policies, factsheets, and other materials.
Collaborate with policy and programming and research teams to ensure all materials are based on the Center's most up-to-date research and reports.
Collaborate with Law and Policy team on legal language and analysis.
Support development of policy memos, fact sheets, guides, reports, and toolkits for key policy areas.
Attend weekly national coalition virtual meeting and provide notes to policy and programming team.
Work closely with Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Partnerships (DEIP) to ensure legislative work is conducted through an Inclusion, Diversity, Anti-Racism, and Equity (IDARE) lens.
Lead and coordinate monthly coalition call of state level GVP organizations.
Serve as liaison to state-level gun violence prevention groups, state lawmakers, and key stakeholders at state and local level to develop partnerships, understand key barriers to policy enactment.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
Four years progressively responsible related professional experience.
