We are seeking a highly motivated Research Specialist to work in a clinical translational laboratory at the Wilmer Eye Institute with focus on retinal vascular disease. The individual will work with a dynamic and multidisciplinary research group consisting of a broad array of individuals at multiple levels of training. The position will require on-the-job training as well as travel to local research sites for ongoing multicenter studies. The research topics encompass a range of methods to study retinal disorders that impact the structure and function of the retinal vasculature. We aim to develop new methods of diagnosis and treatment using state-of-the-art imaging techniques and treatment modalities. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual with at least undergraduate level training in one or more of the following fields: Neurosciences, Visual Physiology, Ophthalmology, Image Analysis, Clinical Research, Biomedical Engineering or related fields. This candidate should be capable of independently learning new analytical techniques and will benefit from some experience in one or more of the following areas: research protocol development and writing, IRB submissions, biostatistics, data analysis, human subject recruitment, retinal imaging (OCT, OCTA, Fundus photography, ERG etc), refraction, visual acuity assessment and familiarity with research administration. The ideal candidate will have an excellent record of academic achievement and self-motivation. Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Learn and implement research protocols with supervision initially and then independently.
Learn and implement basic and advanced human subject research methods and relevant regulations.
Interact with human research participants in a polite, professional and confident manner.
Make significant contributions to the group's research, analyze data and prepare graphs/ charts, including statistics.
Collect, organize and present information to colleagues by verbal and written means on a regular basis.
Learn and perform diagnostic imaging and assessments for research studies including fundus photography, OCT, OCTA, ERG etc.
Help develop detailed imaging protocols.
Troubleshoot problems with equipment and methods.
IRB protocol development, submission and management
Prepare, edit and revision of IRB applications.
Preparation and submission of IRB amendments and updates.
Maintenance of IRB applications in good standing.
Human Subjects Recruitment
Assist with identification and recruitment of human subjects from clinical populations.
Maintain organized database and records of research subjects.
Assist with maintaining complex research equipment.
Prepare, edit and revise research documents, reports and documents.
Support any aspect of administrative research needs for the group.
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
