The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) is an Organized Research Unit which conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health related problems where non human primates are the animal models of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to its missions of teaching and service.
Job Summary
Under general supervision, provide technical, scientific, and organizational assistance to the operation of the laboratory research activities focused on regenerative medicine in translational models. Assist and support studies focusing on stem cell and gene therapy. Work closely with the immediate supervisor and other laboratory personnel on a daily basis regarding all aspects of tasks and responsibilities; review and evaluate procedures to confirm they are performed in a timely and effective manner and according to laboratory protocols, and that samples and data are collected and stored; order and maintain supplies and coordinate inventory records and management with documentation according to good laboratory practice (GLP) standards; maintain working relationships with other laboratory members; and follow UC, Campus, and Primate Center guidelines in performing tasks, and consult supervisor regularly on activities and documentation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Position requires the performance of monotonous and repetitive tasks and procedures for long periods of time and operating and maintaining equipment, and safely lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.
Perform assigned duties in BioSafety Level 2 and 3 conditions where non-human primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous infectious agents such as HIV, SIV, or Herpes B virus.
Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, lab coats, gloves, masks, face shields, and head covers.
Use and disposal of radioactive isotope, hazardous materials and other environmental health and safety procedures.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Measles vaccination or proof of illness required. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
Perform assigned duties in BioSafety Level 2+ facilities where non-human primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous infectious agents such as SIV, Zika virus, or Herpes B virus.
Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including gown, lab coats, gloves, masks, face shield, and head cover. -Work with human and nonhuman primate specimens and chemical agents. Position may require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. In such instances, employee will be required to wear protective clothing for personal protection from infectious diseases and animals.
Work irregular hours (early mornings, early evening, and/or weekends, as needed). Work occasional overtime including some weekends and holidays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education/Experience:
Experience in the conduct of research in the areas of Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, or related fields involving animal models.
Laboratory experience to write and follow written protocols with strict attention to detail.
Experience in applied laboratory techniques including cell culture and preparation of blood and tissue samples for various types of analysis and basic experience with tissue collection and analysis.
Experience with computer applications for transcribing raw data and entering and analyzing results.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
Skills to perform sectioning of fixed and frozen histological specimens.
Skills to operate and maintaining various types of equipment including working with microscopy, morphologic techniques, and with various assays.
Knowledge of microbiology, sterile technique, and containment for BSL-2 and -3 infectious agents.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Education/Experience:
Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences or related scientific discipline such as Genetics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology with an emphasis on animal research.
Experience to read, write and follow protocols.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
Communication and interpersonal skills to confer and relate professionally with other laboratory personnel.
Organizational skills to maintain chemical inventories, and preparation of media and solutions.
Skill to maintain records of laboratory purchases, and to store and organize in appropriate locations.
Knowledge of chemicals and their safe handling procedures.
Analytical skills to troubleshoot problems and follow protocols.
Skills to work independently under direct supervision to execute procedures with defined protocols and timelines and according to detailed protocols.
Skills to multi-task, pay strict attention to detail, and perform multiple procedures in a fast-paced environment and with regular communications with immediate supervisor.
