We are seeking a full-time Makerspace Director who will educate and inspire students in the art, technology, and practice of fabrication and making, with an overarching focus on safety and stewardship. This position, which reports to the Executive Director - Makerspace, will lead a team to manage, maintain, and support the programming and operation of the campus-wide Makerspaces and studios at Northeastern University Oakland. Successful candidates will have a deliberate approach to inclusivity, strong shop management skills, strong people management skills, and an interest in formulating and implementing innovative improvements to the makerspace. Candidates should have experience fostering a diverse and inclusive fabrication environment with students, faculty, and staff.
The Global Makerspace Ecosystem:
Northeastern's global makerspace ecosystem is a series of transdisciplinary teaching and learning innovation centers, intended to be a crossroads of creativity, camaraderie, and safety for every student, staff, and faculty member from all Northeastern University colleges. With a focus on internal and external outreach, innovation, and collaboration, the makerspaces will support the Northeastern community in producing everything from personal passion projects to new ventures and course assignments while fostering an experiential learning community that extends beyond the spaces themselves.
The makerspaces will be highly visible, accessible, and connected resources for the global Northeastern University community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in engineering, design, arts, fabrication, manufacturing technology, or a related field is required.
Teaching, mentoring, interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills and ability to work with, receive, and implement feedback from a broad spectrum of people.
5-8 years' experience working with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff in a fabrication-oriented academic environment, and experience with the design thinking process (ideation, prototyping, and testing).
Experience with a wide variety of fabrication skills, including: 3d printing, laser cutting, metalworking, sewing, electronics, woodworking, and other design and prototyping equipment.
Demonstrated success with safety, teaching and mentoring, fabrication, and/or making with a strong background in maintaining and repairing shop equipment.
Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to handle multiple workstreams.
Knowledge and understanding of current Environmental Health and Safety practices within makerspaces or shops.
3-5 years' experience managing a team of staff and student technical instructors.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
Design, organize, and deliver training on equipment operation and shop safety.
Collaborate with technician to develop policies and documentation for inclusive use of the makerspace, including innovative ways for students to use and interact with a wide variety of fabrication tools and techniques.
Supervise lab managers, studio technicians, and student employees on the Oakland campus.
Supervise safe and inclusive use of the makerspace, including advising students directly on design and fabrication best practices.
Work in an inclusive manner with all students regardless of backgrounds and interests, especially those from non-dominant groups in STEM.
Manage and maintain the day to day within the makerspace, including equipment, operations, and safety protocols and documentation.
Collaborate on hiring, training, and workflow of student team.
Execute other duties as assigned by the Executive Director as needed.
The expected hiring range for this position is USD $107,300 to USD $139,485, based upon the position's scope and responsibilities.
