The Plumbing Shop Supervisor plans, coordinates, supervises, assigns and assists with the work of plumbing shop staff, including renovations, installations, maintenance and repair of piping/plumbing systems throughout the College and its facilities. Oversees and tracks all phases of work orders and their costs. Responsible for the plumbing shop’s quality of work and adherence to specifications, policies and safety regulations.
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma and four years of experience in plumbing construction and repair. Must be a highly skilled plumber with extensive knowledge of standard practices, methodology, techniques, safety procedures and requirements of the plumbing trade. Supervisory experience required. Must have a valid SC driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment, as the employee will be required to drive state vehicles to transport equipment and/or personnel when needed. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to lead others effectively, while participating in a team environment. Must be able to follow complex oral and written instructions. Must be able to supervise and instruct a crew of plumbing trades specialists and prioritize work orders. Experience in utilizing on-line work order systems is a plus. Skill with electronic devices such as iPhone and iPad is preferred. Must have strong computer skills and be proficient with using email and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.). Must have the ability to utilize computerized web-based programs for work order processing, performance evaluations and timesheets.
Must have the ability and skill to assess, locate and correct emergency and general plumbing problems. Ability to comprehend blueprints, plans, and plumbing specifications required. All employees at the College are expected to perform their jobs in a safe manner in accordance with best safety practices as prescribed by their department, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration training as provided by Facilities Management at the College of Charleston.

Must be able to perform duties as described and work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Must be able to work in close quarters, climb ladders/stairs, enter/exit hatches, and work on rooftops. Must be able to work in areas of excessive heat/cold and lift or move furniture, objects, heavy components, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Overtime and call back work is required after normal working hours and on weekends as needed. May be required to be on campus prior to and immediately following all emergencies such as hurricanes, floods, snow/ice storms, etc. Position is required to support major campus events such as commencement, move in, and Alumni Weekend (A Charleston Affair).

1. Supervises plumbing staff in performing their duties throughout the college campus and in various college buildings, dormitories, historic homes, office buildings and large facilities. Ensures staff operates mobile electronic device to access, update, and complete work orders to include all appropriate information to reflect action taken, labor hours, parts, materials and other historical and cost related items. Ensures that all staff are current with required training.

Assists staff with troubleshooting and repairing defects and malfunctions in piping and plumbing systems and helps install pipes and plumbing fixtures. Cuts, threads, and assembles appropriate plumbing materials as needed. Assembles and installs cleanouts to new and existing plumbing/sewer lines to allow access for repairs and preventive maintenance. Oversees and performs preventive maintenance for plumbing equipment. Responsible for maintaining all aspects of plumbing distribution through various points on campus. Performs backflow testing and repairs as needed.

3. Inspects work in progress and completed to ensure adherence to instructions and work order specifications. Instructs, enforces policies, disciplines and evaluates staff performance. Performs a variety of basic administrative tasks. Makes recommendations to ensure shop is appropriately staffed. Utilizes a computer to access, update, assign and track work orders in the web-based CMMS (AiM) system. Enters pertinent information such as cost and status into AiM to ensure that the shop work order report is current. Communicates via email with Facilities Management and other College personnel.

4. Demonstrates safety knowledge by practicing and adhering to all proper safety procedures and OSHA regulations pertaining to the plumbing trade. Ensures employees follow proper plumbing and safety procedures and work is of good quality and meets appropriate building codes. Follows and enforces OSHA regulations and proper safety practices pertaining to trade. Conducts regular OSHA and safety training sessions; documents attendees and meeting minutes; performs safety audits. Consistently wears/uses appropriate personal protective equipment as required. Responsible for ensuring that furniture, floors, walls, and surrounding work area is protected from dust and debris while work is being performed. Also responsible for ensuring that all job sites are thoroughly cleaned when work has been completed.
