Summary | The Manager of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) sets, communicates, and shares the tone for safety at Michigan Tech. The EHS manager directs the development, implementation, and day to day operations of the university’s comprehensive occupational health and safety programs. This includes oversight and continuous improvement of existing programs as well as the development and implementation of new policies and procedures that promote campus safety culture and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The EHS Manager will also provide leadership, direction and support while working collaboratively with a wide variety of individuals and groups to promote excellence in campus health, safety and environmental stewardship. These groups and individuals include faculty, students, staff and their unions, committees and groups; the Director of EHS, the EHS team, Risk, Insurance, Safety, Security, and Compliance (RISSC); and local, state and federal agencies and community partners.
| Responsibilities | 1. Develops, administers and continuously improves Michigan Tech’s Husky safety culture including a. managing employee occupational health and safety programs, b. mentoring employees who create job hazard assessments (JHAs) and standard operating procedures (SOPs), and c. overseeing safety and compliance training, life safety activities, annual certifications, and emergency planning. 2. Identifies, maintains, educates, and applies a working knowledge of federal, state, and local health and safety rules and regulations. 3. Tracks compliance of federal, state, and local occupational safety and health requirements, including documentation, internal and external reporting, permits, manifests, training, and policy development. 4. Serve as liaison with applicable external regulatory agencies. 5. Orchestrate annual Safety Audits of the campus and personnel to ensure compliance with all Regulations and University Safety Policies. 6. Develops and administers required EHS training, inspection, and communication programs (such as Hazard Communication; crane, powered industrial trucks, other specialized equipment; Bloodborne Pathogen respiratory protection, hearing, ergonomics programs; etc.). 7. Record and investigate all incidents of injury, work related illness or damage to property, partnering with the necessary parties to resolve any identified corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence. 8. Drives closure of effective corrective / preventive actions of incident investigations, audits, and inspections. 9. Develop and maintaining EHS metrics to meet the statistical needs of campus administration/academic teams and governmental regulatory compliance reports. 10. Coach management and employees at all levels to advance compliance with all EHS program expectations and applicable federal & state laws 11. Manages employee complaints and grievances resolutions as they relate to occupational health and safety. 12. Assists in developing and tracking departmental budgets. 13. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives. 14. This position also responds to emergency situations if required and will provide support to emergency operations staff during emergent events. 15. Perform other duties, as assigned, in support of the EHS Strategic Plan 16. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work. | Required Education, Certifications, Licensures | ? Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering, Occupational Safety, Chemical Hygiene, or related technical field or the equivalent work experience. ? Have either completed OSHA 30 training (or equivalent) or have the ability to complete training within three months of date of hire. ? Must possess a valid Driver's License with no more than a total combination of five (5) current points in the (or any other) point system, with no single infraction totaling more than three (3) points
| Required Experience | ? 3+ years of safety experience in an industrial environment, government, or university setting. | Desirable Education and/or Experience | ? Advanced degree in an EHS-related field ? Experience in research ? 5+ years of experience managing EHS activities ? Two or more years working in an academic or university environment. ? Experience working with regulatory agencies and external auditors. ? Demonstrated experience implementing safety culture in the workplace. ? Experience as an OSHA, MSHA, or MIOSHA inspector.
| Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities | ? Required Working knowledge of OSHA and MIOSHA General Industry regulations. ? Demonstratable use of analytical skills to evaluate EHS performance metrics and outcomes. ? Experience tailoring communications to meet a variety of audience levels – verbal, virtual, and written. ? One or more years experience working with a diverse environment of employees and non-employees ? Demonstrated ability to move between tasks and projects on short notice and to quickly change priorities based on campus and department needs, while still meeting project deadlines (Flexibility is key in this role as priorities change quickly). ? Able to work well independently and in a team environment. ? Experience handling confidential information. ? Proficient with Google Suite software, Adobe Acrobat, and the ability to learn specialized software utilized by the department and university. ? Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff. ? Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment. | Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities | ? Working knowledge of radiation, laser, and biosafety standards and applications. ? Working knowledge of EGLE air, water and/or hazardous waste regulations and/or working knowledge of NFPA fire codes, Health Department codes, and/or other health and safety codes. ? Familiar with OSHA and MIOSHA Construction regulations and applications. ? Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints. ? Experience developing and implementing environmental and safety policies, programs, and associated training. | Work Environment and/or Physical Demands | ? Ability to perform limited work in PPE for protection from mechanical hazards and laboratory radiation, chemicals, and biohazards. ? Most work is performed in an office or campus environment. ? While performing this job, the employee is exposed to weather and environmental conditions consistent with Upper Peninsula climate. This may include warm, hot or cold temperatures and accompanying precipitation, humidity, and wind conditions consistent with a northern climate. ? The noise level in the work environment is moderate. ? Travel for this position may be required. ? While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk 30% of the time, stand 20% of the time and sit 50% of the time. ? The employee will occasionally lift and or carry up to 40lbs. ? The employee may use computers, phones, copiers and other office equipment in the course of daily duties. ? While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to use hands and fingers to, handle or feel objects, touch and use tools, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, twist, lift, reach, push, pull, grasp, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, grasp, talk, hear, and walk during the course of employment. ? A minimum of forty (40) hours work week based on EHS demands, occasionally requiring a combination of office hours, after hours and/or weekends.
