UC Irvine operates two core Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratories that support growing infectious diseases research programs in the Schools of Medicine and Biological Sciences. The incumbent will have responsibility for managing all operations and activities of the BSL-3 laboratories. This position involves working with researchers, facility management and administrative staff to ensure safety, consistency, efficiency and compliance of the research laboratories and programs.
The incumbent will also serve as an instructor with the UCI National BSL-3 Training Program. The University of California, Irvine operates a nationally recognized training program for all personnel that work in and support high-containment biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratories. Established in 2006 under direct grant support from the National Institutes of Health, the UC Irvine program has provided training to over 3000 people from across the United States and worldwide. The program also provides training support for the entire University of California system-wide as a UC Center of Excellence, operates a dedicated BSL-3 training laboratory facility at the UC Irvine campus and is a required training for UC as well as several other universities, government agencies (DHS, CDC) and corporate entities.
Your Role on the Team
Applies professional knowledge or expertise in one or more specialty areas within EH&S and serves as lead person on one or more program(s) within a single discipline. Work is reviewed upon completion to ensure predetermined objectives are adequately met and that application of professional / technical judgment is sound. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice. Decision-making is based on established procedures; relevant laws; regulations and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant science methodology; impact on other EH&S programs, and senior management approvals as required. Decisions may impact individual work, other EH&S programs, other departments and / or segments of the organization.

Required:
Experience working with biohazardous agents
Experience working in BSL-3 laboratories
Ability to use Windows and/or Mac computer systems and typing and clerical skills
Ability to work with diverse groups of researchers and support staff
Experience in working with laboratory animals
Ability to carry out general experiments with infectious agents
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
Scientific background and experience in infectious diseases research
A minimum of 1 year working in BSL-3 laboratories
A minimum of 1 year working with laboratory animals
Preferred:
Data analysis and presentation skills
Training laboratories staff on scientific techniques
Ability to organize and maintain laboratory instruments and supplies
Ability to maintain accurate records of studies and laboratory management
Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills
Knowledge of aseptic techniques
Graduate degree in a related area is preferred
Professional certification preferred.
Experience providing BSL-3 didactic and practical training to laboratory staff
