Position Summary:
The CMU Health and Physical Education (HPE) program in the Department of Physical Education and Sport is recruiting for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the level of assistant or associate professor effective August 2025. Tenure-track faculty in the department generally teach nine-hours per semester while also engaging in service to the department, college, university, and their field of expertise as well as maintain an active research line within their area of expertise.
This position will primarily teach K-12 physical education courses with an emphasis in motor development, adapted physical education, and elementary methods. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by areas of expertise or department needs.
Required Qualifications:
Terminal degree in K-12 Physical Education or related field. Will consider ABD candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor, however, first reappointment will be contingent upon degree completion.
Three years of successful experience teaching adapted and/or elementary physical education courses in a K-12 school setting.
Evidence of an active research agenda related to K-12 physical education.
Demonstrated leadership and collaborative skills.
Effective oral/written communication skills.
Proficiency in use of technology.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in K-12 Physical Education, with an emphasis in motor development, adapted physical education, and/or elementary methods.
Five years of successful experience teaching adapted and/or elementary physical education courses in a K-12 school setting.
Experience teaching at the university level.
Evidence of involvement with professional associations and/or organizations associated with school physical education policy and promotion.

The CMU Health and Physical Education program is an undergraduate four-year program that prepares teaching candidates with a major in K-12 Health and Physical Education. The program is growing, having doubled the number of majors over the past five years, and boasts the highest pass rate among first-time test takers on Michigans Test for Teacher Certification over the past three years. Students within the program are heavily recruited and hired upon graduation.
