Position Description:
The Department of Clinical Studies at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Equine Primary Health Care and Experiential Learning. The earliest anticipated start date is July 1, 2025, or another mutually agreed-upon date in 2025.
Applicants must have a DVM (or equivalent) and be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice in the Province of Ontario. The applicant must possess demonstrated experience in equine primary care clinical practice, including equine dentistry, castration, preventative health programs, emergency medicine and other aspects of routine primary patient care. Advanced training or qualifications in equine dentistry or another aspect of large animal veterinary practice are assets (e.g., American Board of Veterinary Practitioners). A Master’s degree or higher and experience with graduate student supervision are desirable. Experience in teaching and scholarly research will be considered favorably. The ideal candidate should have strong skills in primary health care, verbal and written communication, collegial practitioner engagement, and experience in teaching or formally mentoring others.
The successful candidate will spend part of their time teaching in the OVC Large Animal Hospital and some of their time facilitating student learning at partner primary care practices, working with final-year DVM students by teaching entry-level skills with clinical cases on primary healthcare rotations.
You will work with a dynamic team of large animal internal medicine, surgery and equine sports medicine clinicians and other faculty to coordinate primary health care learning. You will be supported by an excellent technician and customer service team at Canada’s highest-ranked and one of the world’s top ten globally ranked veterinary colleges.
In addition to your efforts in equine primary care practice, you will support our clinical skills teaching in laboratory sessions dedicated to teaching DVM students’ day-one competencies in equine practice. You will also coordinate and support the required 8-week external experiential learning placements and external large animal core or elective clinical experiences for final-year DVM students. This includes fostering external partnerships and ensuring appropriate training in teaching and mentorship for preceptors hosting final-year DVM students for clinical placements. While this will be predominantly focused on large animal practice placements, you and a companion animal faculty counterpart will be responsible for all experiential learning partnerships and overseeing external core and elective placements, supported by the administrative team within the office of the Associate Dean, Students & Academic.
The remaining time will be spent on scholarly and academic service activities. The candidate will develop and participate in independent or collaborative research, ideally centered on the scholarship of teaching or a related field. You may expect to mentor and supervise graduate students. External remunerative activities are permitted within university guidelines.
