The Emergency Department (ED) Safety Technician supports the AES Director of Operations to monitor environment of care factors that impact patient care, faculty and staff, to ensure patient and staff safety and efficient department operations in Adult Emergency Services (AES). The UMHS classification for this position is Safety Technician Intermediate.
Monitor department equipment to assure proper use and maintenance. Perform minor maintenance, e.g.batteries, on hand replacement parts. Identify and communicate ongoing equipment concerns (i.e. consistent battery malfunction, broken cord, staff training deficits) to AES Director of Operations.
Maintain awareness of unit readiness related to medical-surgical supplies, linen, stretchers, oxygen tanks, crash carts, HLD log, scopes and other emergency equipment.Escalate deficiencies to the AES Director of Operations.
Round unit/treatment area each morning utilizing ED Environment of Care check list for cleanliness, supplies and equipment in proper location, fire and safety compliance, Address and resolve issues that do not require communication with an external department.Report concerns that cannot be immediately addressed and resolved to AES Director of Operations. Submit completed check list to AES Director of Operations on a weekly basis.
Inspect each patient treatment room at least monthly to evaluate equipment for functionality and need for repair or replacement as well as overall physical condition of the room with respect to need for patch/paint/sinks caulked etc.
Make recommendations to the AES Director of Operations concerning the modification, improvement, or removal of any department equipment, facilities, or machinery that is hazardous to employee safety or health.
Identify opportunities to re-use or recycle material to minimize consumption of new materials, minimize waste, or to convert waste to by-products.
Perform a monthly inventory of personal protection equipment (PPE) and other equipment required for efficient decontamination procedures.Recommend procurement of PPE or other related items to the AES Director of Operations.
Maintain Operations Level competency for HAZMAT procedures and decontamination.Serve as member of HAZMAT PPE training team.
Serve as active member of ED Emergency Preparedness committee, participating in policy and procedure development, training, drills and after action reviews.
Consistently participate in unit safety huddles.
Participate in quality improvement projects and teams related to environment of care, supplies and equipment.
Lead week rounding with Environmental Services, Infection Prevention, and AES Leadership.
Represent Adult Emergency services as an active participant with Michigan Medicine Safety Liaison and Injury Prevention Network.
Maintain Unit Fire Safety Board
Continuously educate all ED Job families on environment of care violations, solution, resources and safety measures. Including, but not limited leading education at RN Change of Shift, Clerical Shift Change, Charge Nurse Meeting, Work load, Unit Base Committee or Unit Safety Huddles.
Minimum 3 years of experience.
Demonstrated excellent organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively during emergency situations.
Demonstrated ability to work productively both independently or as a team member.
Competent skills with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc)
Operations level HAZMAT certification
Occupational Health and Safety Class or Certification
Emergency Preparedness experience
Experience/participation in quality improvement/lean initiatives.
Demonstrated skill training
Working knowledge of regulatory requirements for ED operations and environment of care
Emergency department experience
