Established by the Kent County Board of Commissioners as an enterprise fund, the DPW provides essential sustainable materials management and solid waste services to residents throughout the county.
While we are considered an agency of Kent County, under the general oversight of the Board of Commissioners, our operations are directly guided by the Board of Public Works. Through this governance and our mission-driven approach, we continue to lead in responsible waste management, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.
This position offers flexible/hybrid employment.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
Experience:
At least six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, finance, and fiscal management, including a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience.
Extensive experience in government and municipal finance strongly preferred.
Knowledge:
Strong knowledge of fund accounting, enterprise fund operations, public finance, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Working knowledge of government and enterprise fund accounting standards and budget development processes.
Strong knowledge of audit practices, financial reporting, and applicable federal and state regulations experience.
Skills:
Demonstrated proficiency with financial management systems and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
Strong analytical, strategic thinking and excellent communication skills.
Ability to interpret and implement accounting policies and procedures in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Other:
Ability to supervise and train staff, evaluate performance, and manage disciplinary actions when necessary.
Understanding federal and state grant requirements, tracking and reporting.
A CPA, CFA, MBA, or CMA certification is preferred but not required.
