The Department of History at Davidson College invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in early American history and/or that of the British Atlantic World from the 16th through 18th centuries. We are especially interested in candidates who conceptualize the era expansively as demonstrated through their teaching and research. The successful candidate will teach existing survey and upper-level courses on early American history and the era of the American Revolution as well as develop new courses that appeal to our increasingly diverse students. The area of specialization is open, and scholars of transnational and global fields such as (but not limited to) environmental history; histories of enslavement; histories of migration, trade, and economic exchange; intellectual history; Indigenous history (beyond the Native South); and/or the history of science/medicine will complement existing strengths of the department. We seek to hire an early Americanist who thinks creatively and dynamically about curricular opportunities and connections.
Candidates should be committed to excellence in both undergraduate teaching and scholarly research. Ph.D. in History expected by June 30, 2025. The successful candidate will teach five courses each year (four in the first year) including introductory and upper-level courses of their own design. The candidate will also participate in the college's Writing Program.
Davidson College wants faculty to excel as teachers and scholars. Through the E.H. Little Library, the college offers extensive instructional design resources to create innovative courses. The Center for Teaching and Learning assists faculty in developing pedagogical excellence. Faculty support also includes funding to attend professional meetings and a robust set of internal grants for research materials, student assistants, travel, and other resources for junior faculty to attain their publication goals. The Office of Sponsored Programs supports faculty members in both seeking and managing external funds. Pre-tenure faculty members may request a sabbatical in their fifth year.
