The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a joint academic department with reporting lines to the College of Engineering and the Medical School. The dual-school environment includes a growing faculty roster within both schools, a large and increasing collaborative research portfolio, multi-building research facilities, innovative instructional programs at all academic levels, and a focus on research translation and entrepreneurship. BME is pursuing strategic goals to establish enhanced connections within and beyond both schools. BME is seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Facilities Assistant to join our facilities team. This role is essential for supporting the facilities operations, ensuring adherence to university policies and regulations, and contributing to a productive and well-maintained environment for faculty, staff, and students.
A robust commitment to the principles and goals of Biomedical Engineering, the College of Engineering, the Medical School, and the broader University of Michigan is essential.
Assists in the coordination in conjunction with the facilities manager the daily maintenance and housekeeping operations for a large academic department with space in several buildings; initiates contact, coordinates, and follow-up with Plant Operations and responds to building and facility inquiries and problems from faculty, staff, and students. Act as liaison with other UM departments: IT-COM for phone and data installations, Key Office, including departmental key distribution duties, and C-Cure building access. Moving and trucking. Property Disposition. AEC. North Campus Maintenance Region.
Assists with the manager to perform regular inspections of building facilities, furniture, and equipment to determine maintenance and repair needs; coordinates disposition of obsolete equipment and furniture and assists with inventory control duties over department equipment and furnishings.
Assists along with the facilities manager and department administration with yearly space analysis duties and performs routine administrative and clerical activities including the preparation of special or periodic reports and fiscal records. Make and change room drawings and floor plans.
Assist with the planning, scheduling, and execution of lab and office relocations. Support the department administration in collecting lab and research requirements, submitting the necessary space requests, and assisting with the onboarding process for new faculty and researchers.
Assist with developing and implementing comprehensive safety protocols at the department level, ensuring a comprehensive and organized documentation system for lab safety procedures.
Assist with the monitoring and training concerning hazardous waste. Acts as liaison with lab personnel to environmental health and safety coordinators in Engineering and the Medical School related to lab inspections of laboratories and facilities to ensure compliance with regulations and procedures.
Assist the Facility Manager in the planning and implementation of special renovation projects

High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum of 2 years of experience in a related role requiring confidentiality, timeliness, customer service, organization, progressively responsibility in facilities operations
Demonstration of good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and other basic computing skills including email, calendaring, and document creation and editing
Strong attention to detail, organizational, and time management skills as well as the ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
Demonstrated ability to work independently, within a team, and with a diverse population while delivering a high level of customer service
Record of good attendance and punctuality
Experience working in an environment where independent decision-making, judgment, and actions were demonstrated successfully
Associate's degree in engineering, facilities management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Some knowledge of building systems and applicable codes
Ability to regularly move items weighing up to 50 lbs.
